The rules for OTB Bughouse
- (R000) The game is played using two chessboards and two chess clocks, positioned so that all four players see the time on both clocks. On single chessboard the pieces are initially positioned and moved as in regular chess.
- (R00) Taken pieces are transferred to partner, who can drop such a piece as a move on any empty square, except pawn cannot be dropped on first and last rank. A pawn can promote to a queen or knight, this must be declared. When the promoted pawn is captured, it reverts back to pawn.
- (R01) Bughouse game is finished when it is finished on any of the chessboards. If both games finish simultaneously, the team who has won both games wins, else the game is DRAW.
- (R0) CLOCK-MOVE = you can freely change your move provided the clock has not been pressed
- (R1) TAKEN PIECES MUST BE TRANSFERRED to your partner stuff-place immediately after the end of your move (clock press), and no later than before your next move.
- (R2) NO HIDING OF PIECES = during the whole game both your opps must be able to see all your stuff-pieces, and these must be hold in your stuff-place (on the table between the board and your hands). Also the piece you are just dropping must be visible and recognizable.
- (R3) NO PREMOVE = you cannot move or touch pieces on chessboard if it is not your move (your time is not ticking). You can touch your stuff-pieces however, provided you don't contradict rule R2.
- (R4) FULL COMMUNICATION is allowed between partners, but every player must do his/her moves physically by hand and press the clock with the same hand. Nobody should disturb playing team.
- (R5) BOTH PARTNERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO CLAIM ANYTHING = All 4 players can claim anything on both boards (time, checkmate, illegal move, 3x repeated position)
- (R6) 3x REPEATED POSITION = draw. A claim is made by counting: 1,2,3=draw. This could be done through both boards as well, if the same pieces are dropped repeatedly on the same squares.
- (R7) If you take POISONED PIECE (poisoned = you are checkmated in 1), and your partner checkmate his opp by dropping this piece, the game is DRAW.
- (R8) No stalemate, no 50 move rule.
